Maintaining Legal F-1 Status

Documents

  • Keep passport valid
  • Always carry I-94
  • Request extension PRIOR to current I-20 expiration (see section #5 on I-20) if not finished with program
  • Get new I-20 for any change in major or degree level

Work

  • Do NOT work off campus without prior authorization
  • Do NOT work on campus more than 20 hours per week while school is in session

Travel

  • Have ISS advisor sign your I-20 before traveling outside U.S. if you plan to return to continue your studies
  • Follow US-VISIT border entry and exit procedures

Academics

  • Complete a full course of study each semester unless granted PRIOR permission from ISS advisor to be less than full time
  • You can count up to one 3 credit online course toward your required full-time enrollment during the fall and spring semesters 
  • Get ISS advisor approval if taking classes at another school (including online courses) and if the classes are counting toward fulfilling your full-time enrollment requirements
  • Inform ISS advisor if planning to transfer to another school at same or different program level

General

  • Leave the U.S., apply for change of status, or be admitted to another academic program and inform ISS advisor of plans within 60 days after finishing current program.
  • Report change of U.S. address in KU Enroll & Pay (Jayhawk/Current address type) within 10 days.
  • Always read e-mails from “ISS Electronic News".

ISS is open 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday. 

Walk-in hours:
1:30pm-4:00pm Monday-Friday

Appointment hours:
9:00am-11:30am Tuesday-Friday
 
Walk-in vs. Appointment
Appointments are for matters ≥ 15 minutes.
Walk-in advising is for matters ≤ 15 minutes.
Walk-ins are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Walk-ins: Withdrawal from KU, concurrent enrollment, curricular practical training*, dependents, duplicate I-20 or DS-2019, extension for I-20*, financial update, J-1 on-campus work permit, reduced course load, social security number, transferring out, and any general questions.
 
Appointments: J-1 academic training, change of status, economic hardship, curricular practical training*, optional practical training, OPT STEM extension, reinstatement, and extension for I-20* or DS-2019.
 
*can be conducted during walk-in or by appointment.
