When moving to a new country, where you live will impact your life tremendously. Your considerations should include the distance to KU, where you will buy food, where will you have fun, your ability to access public transportation, and being able to afford living there. Temporary Accommodation Information

Lawrence has a wide variety of hotels and motels. Rates can vary greatly. Mention that you are a new KU International student and you may receive a discount.

Education System

The education system in the US may be different for that of your home country. If you have children with you that are of school age, learn more about the US’s education system here.

Childcare

If you have young children, you can find information about childcare in the US here. Daycares fill up quickly, so it is important to start looking early and reserve a spot. Some parents in the US even reserve a spot in a daycare before having their child.

Public Schools

Lawrence has 20 schools in its public school district. For more information on schools and enrollment, vist their website.

Required Immunizations for Lawrence Public Schools

Certain immunizations are required if your children are going to enroll in public schools in Lawrence. While you can get any of these immunizations in the United States, it may by cheaper to get them in your home country.

  1. Diphtheria
  2. Pertussis (up to age 7)
  3. Tetanus
  4. Polio
  5. Measles
  6. Mumps
  7. Rubella
  8. Hepatitis B
  9. Two Varicella (chickenpox) immunizations up to 10th grade
  10. One Varicella (chickenpox) immunization for 11th and 12th
  11. If a child has had chickenpox, they are not required to have the Varicella immunization, but must have documentation from a licensed physician
  12. A booster Tdap is required for 7th to 12th graders if they have no history of the Tdap vaccine

While KU does not offer transportation from Kansas City International Airport to Lawrence, there are various private shuttles that you can take. Some rental car services also provide one-way rental cars to Lawrence. If you have small children, it is important to consider whether the shuttle or rental car you choose provides car seats or not.

Definitions

  • Flat Rate: Flat rate means that this is the total cost of the shuttle reservation, regardless if it is used by only one passenger or more than one passenger.
  • Shared Ride: Shared ride means that you pay the specified amount to reserve your space in a shuttle that may also be providing transportation to other individuals.

Better Alternative Transportation Services (BATS)

Car seats available upon request

$84 (cash) or $89 (credit card) for exclusive, door-to-door delivery to any location in Lawrence. Driver monitors flight arrivals and meets passengers at the arrival baggage claim area. If you share the ride with a friend, you can split the fare. We recommend reservations made within 24 hours of your trip by email (reservations@kcibats.com). Ground Transportation Services (GTS)

Car seats available upon request

$60 each rider for basic shared-ride shuttle service with door-to-door delivery to any location in Lawrence. This price includes one large bag and one carry-on item (such as a backpack), and each additional bag is an additional $10. Town car service for $95 total is also available. 5 Guys Transportation

No car seats

$100 one-way flat rate for a van that holds 1-6 people. 5 Guys Transportation provides a private door-to-door car service to or from Lawrence. A driver will meet you at baggage claim at the airport with a personalized signboard and will deliver you to your home, hotel, residence hall or any other location. Super Shuttle

No car seats

$56 - $125 for a shared ride with door-to-door shuttle service for up to 10 passengers. For additional details, go to the Super Shuttle Website, email reservations@supershuttle.net, or call 1-800-BLUEVAN (1-800-258-3826) toll-free from within the U.S.

SDM Transportation

No car seats

Door-to-door delivery service in a four door mid-sized sedan from the airport to anywhere in Lawrence. $75 one-way and $145 round trip. SDM Transportation is a private car, on-demand, door to door service operating primarily in the early mornings, evenings, nights, major holidays, all day Thursday service and on weekends. Taxi Service

No car seats

Taxis are available through various taxi service telephones located at the baggage claim areas in each terminal and outside the terminal exits. Taxi service from the airport is very expensive, but it may be possible to share the ride with other people to reduce the cost. Before entering a taxi, establish the estimated cost with the driver.

Uber

Car seats available upon request

Uber shuttles can be requested through the Uber app. The price can fluctuate greatly depending on demand. The price will be given in the app before reservation.

Rental Car

Car seats available depending on rental company

There is typically a minimum age requirement of at least 21 to rent a car (with a younger driver surcharge up to age 25), and drivers must have a license that will allow them to drive legally in the U.S. If you would like to rent a car, please see the car rental link on the Kansas City International Airport webpage for options. Many companies require that the car be returned to their originating rental facility, so please be aware of this if you decide to rent one. Enterprise, Budget Kansas City, and Hertz offer one-way rentals, so you can return the cars to their Lawrence locations. Car seat availability may be limited, so it is a good idea to contact rental companies in advance to reserve a car seat if you will need one.
