In order to borrow books and media from KU’s libraries, however, dependents need to purchase a KU Library Borrower Card for a fee. For more information on how to purchase a KU Library Borrower Card, follow this link (https://lib.ku.edu/policies/ku-library-borrower-card).
KU Recreation Services
KU Recreation Services provide memberships for the spouses and domestic partners of students for a fee. Dependents other than spouses and domestic partners may purchase a visitor/guest membership if they are over the age of 18 and are accompanied by a membership holder. Dependents are not eligible for Intramural Sports of the Sport Club Program.
Dependents are able to attend performances at the Lied Center, but are not eligible for the student discount.
Dependents are more than welcome to use the Kansas Union, including its coffee shop and dining services. They are not, however, able to reserve rooms.
Legal Services for Students
Unfortunately, dependents are not eligible to use Legal Services for Students, but it is available for all currently-enrolled students.
Spencer Museum of Art and Natural History Museum
The Spencer Museum of Art and Natural History Museum are free for all, but donations are welcome.
International Family Connections
International Family Connections focuses on organizing social events and information sessions to support international families during their time at KU and fostering friendships with other families. All of its events are open to international students and their dependents.
Opportunities to get involved aren’t limited to KU’s campus. There are many opportunities to get involved in the Lawrence community and many services offered by the community that are perfect for families.
Lawrence Public Library
The Lawrence Public Library is a wonderful community resource that, in addition to lending books, CDs, and DVDs for free, has study rooms, computers, and various activities every week open to everyone. For those with young children, you may want to check out Multicultural Storytime, which includes stories from all over the world! Don't forget your library card!
Parks and Recreation
In addition to maintaining Lawrence’s parks, Lawrence Parks and Recreation runs recreation centers (such as Holcom Park and Rock Chalk Park) and has sports classes for both youth and adults. Lawrence Parks and Recreation also runs Prairie Park Nature Center which offers hands-on environmental and conservation education.
Lawrence Arts Center
The Lawrence Arts Center hosts different performances, exhibitions, and classes related to a variety of art forms.
Theatre Lawrence puts on different plays throughout the year and has opportunity for both adults and kids to take classes in acting, costuming, yoga, and prop-making. Their most popular program is School’s Out, Theatre’s In, which is a program that meets from 9 am to 4 pm on days that school is not in session.
Watkins Museum of History
The Watkins Museum of History is a great way to learn about the history of Lawrence and the surrounding area. The museum has both core exhibits that you can visit anytime and changing exhibits, so there is something new to learn with each visit!
Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with both the KU and the Lawrence community. There are many opportunities to volunteer either through KU or independently.
