Curricular (CPT) Practical Training for F-1 Students

CPT is an opportunity for international students in F-1 status to participate in professional, temporary employment such as an internship, co-op program, practicum or similar situation that fulfills the requirements for an academic course that is an integral part of the student’s curriculum. An ISS advisor will explain the purpose, eligibility and application procedures to take advantage of this opportunity. We will also talk briefly about “Internships with International Organizations” in this workshop.

Optional (OPT) Practical Training for F-1 Students

OPT is an opportunity for F-1 international students to participate in professional, temporary employment that is directly related to their academic major, but is not a part of their curriculum. This employment may occur either during or after completion of the academic program. Learn details about the purpose, eligibility and application procedures to participate in this form of employment from an ISS advisor during this presentation.

24-month STEM OPT Extension for F-1 Students

ISS advising staff will present an overview of the 24-month OPT extension available to students with degrees in certain Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields.

H-1B Cap Gap OPT Extension for F-1 Students

An ISS advisor will discuss the potential for extending F-1 status and OPT work authorization for students having a timely filed petition for H-1B that is either approved or pending with an effective date beyond their OPT expiration date.

H-1B and Employment-based Permanent Residence

An attorney from Bordeau Immigration Law, LLC, a legal firm specializing in employment-based immigration practice, will explain the process for obtaining H-1B employment status and acquiring Permanent Residence (“green card”) through employer sponsorship.
