5. Pre-register

1 to 3 months before your program start date at KU you will receive an email from ISS with instructions to log-in to iHawk. In iHawk you will complete the required e-forms to pre-register for the “YOU at KU - International” orientation and begin uploading documents for your ISS Check-in process.

Pre-Register for the "YOU at KU - International" orientation

All undergraduate students regardless of their immigration status and all graduate students in F-1 or J-1 status are required to participate in the "YOU at KU - International" orientation. Pre-registration for "YOU at KU - International" is required.

  1. After receiving the pre-registration email from ISS, go to iHawk. Click here for iHawk basics.
  2. Click on the blue LOGIN button.
  3. Login with your KU Online ID.
  4. Start with "Getting Started".
  5. Once your "Basic Information" e-form is complete, proceed to the "Orientation" tab.
  6. Submit the "Orientation Pre-Registration" e-form. You should do this as soon as possible. Select your start term above for more detailed information about your pre-registration options and benefits.
  7. Complete the e-forms on the ISS Check-ins tab.

The Fall 2017 “YOU at KU - International” orientation for graduate students is a multiple day program designed to ease your transition to the U.S. and KU. Orientation takes place from August 1 to August 8.

Important Fall 2017 dates for graduate students:

Orientation Housing Options

Option 1: Temporary Housing at Naismith Hall

Temporary housing for orientation is available at Naismith Hall (1800 Naismith Drive), an off-campus residence hall next to the KU campus. More information about Naismith Hall can be found at http://naismithhall.com/internationalprogram/.

Accommodations in Naismith Hall are double-occupancy rooms with a roommate in a two-room, single-gender suite with a shared bathroom. The cost is $189, which covers room rent, the use of towels, bed sheets, pillow with case, and a blanket for the nights of July 31– August 6, including 7 breakfasts. The price is the same whether you stay for all or only a portion of the nights. The $189 cost is in addition to the orientation and check-in fee. It will be billed to your KU student account and is your responsibility to pay.

You must have pre-registered for this option in iHawk by July 16. Once you pre-register, there are no cancellations or refunds if you decide not to stay in Naismith Hall.

NOTE: Students who have secured a Fall 2017 contract to live on campus through the KU Department of Student Housing by Sunday, July 16 may move in early to your assignments beginning August 7 until the official start of your contract on August 17. Additional nightly fees of $21 will be billed to your KU account. If you would like to sign a contract for the 2017-2018 academic year, visit www.housing.ku.edu and click “Contract” at the top. Orientation staff will be available to help students move from Naismith to their permanent residence on the morning of August 7.

Option 2: No Orientation Housing

Secure your own housing. For information about off-campus housing options and local hotels, visit our housing webpage. Keep in mind, orientation transportation is not provided for locations other than on-campus residence halls.

The below hotel has agreed to a special rate for our international student orientation participants.

"YOU at KU - International" Registration Day Details

What is Registration Day?

Registration Day is the first day of your “YOU at KU - International” orientation. You will pick up your name tag, schedule, welcome packet and KU ID Card.

When is it?

Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 9am - 3pm by appointment*

Where is it?

To Be Announced*

*You will receive your specific registration day appointment time through email after you pre-register.

Plan to arrive to Lawrence in time to attend registration. If delayed, report immediately to the International Student Services Office, Strong Hall, Rm 2 (open Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm).


Meals

Orientation includes 5 meals for participants who pre-register by July 16. After this date, you are not guaranteed these meals. Meals not provided by orientation will be your responsibility, with the exception of those who choose to stay in Naismith Hall (in which case breakfast is included). However, you will have access to a variety of campus food courts and residential dining centers, local grocery stores and restaurants.


Transportation & Parking

Airport Transportation:
Visit our transportation page for transportation options from the Kansas City airport to Lawrence.

Campus Parking:

  • Yellow (not gold) lots on the parking map are free from July 29 until August 20.
  • Purchase a permit to park on campus starting August 21.
  • Park in the Mississippi Street parking garage next to the Kansas Union for $1.75 for the first hour and $1.50 for each additional hour. Pay as you exit.

Students who have secured a Fall 2017 contract to live on campus through the KU Department of Student Housing by Sunday, July 16 may move in early to your assignments beginning August 7 until the official start of your contract on August 17. Additional nightly fees of $21 will be billed to your KU account. If you would like to sign a contract for the 2017-2018 academic year, visit www.housing.ku.edu and click “Contract” at the top.

NOTE: You must have secured a housing contract AND pre-registered for this option in iHawk by July 16.

Option 2: Temporary Housing at Naismith Hall

For students not living in on-campus housing, or who have not signed an on-campus housing contract yet, temporary housing for orientation is available at Naismith Hall (1800 Naismith Drive), an off-campus residence hall next to the KU campus. More about Naismith Hall can be found at http://naismithhall.com/internationalprogram/.

Accommodations in Naismith Hall are double-occupancy rooms with a roommate in a two-room, single-gender suite with a shared bathroom. The cost is $158, which covers room rent, the use of towels, bed sheets, pillow with case, and a blanket for the nights of August 7-14. The price is the same whether you stay for all or only a portion of the nights. The $158 cost is in addition to the orientation and check-in fee. It will be billed to your KU student account and is your responsibility to pay. Orientation staff will be available to help students move from Naismith to their permanent residence on the morning of August 15.

What is "YOU at KU - International" Orientation?

"YOU at KU - International" is a multiple day orientation program that takes place each August (Fall semester), January (Spring semester), and June (Summer semester). It is designed to ease your transition into the United States and the University of Kansas. Participants complete all required check-ins, enjoy fun social events, and become better acquainted with the University of Kansas.

From making friends to enrolling in classes, learn more about everything you will do during “You at KU - International”!

Students Exempt from Orientation

Students who are exempt from the "YOU at KU - International" orientation are still required to attend the mandatory check-ins. Please review Arrival and Check-in instructions corresponding to your exemption category.

  3. Tabs, e-forms, Checklists

    Tabs : After you login to iHawk, you will automatically be on the tab where you need to begin. For most students, you will start on the ‘Get Started’ tab. After you finish with ‘Get Started’ you will complete the tabs ‘Orientation’ and ‘ISS Check-In’. The ‘Completed’ tab will show you your progress.

    e-forms: e-forms are the electronic forms that you must complete to provide ISS with your information or requests. Some forms are required. Some forms are optional. Some forms will only open after you complete other forms. Look at the icon next to the form to see if it is required for you.

    Checklist : A checklist is a group of e-forms. You must complete all of the e-forms in a checklist that are required for you, and any optional e-form(s) that may apply to your situation. You must complete all forms that are required for you before you will be able to enroll in classes.
