What does he do at ISS?
Michael directs the orientation and programming functions of the ISS office and serves as an international student advisor on matters related to immigration status and adjustment to life as an international student at the university.
Who is Michael?
A native of Hutchinson, Kansas, Michael has over three decades of experience working in higher education. He joined the staff of ISS as an Assistant Director in 1998, and has been an Associate Director since 2002. While serving as a member of the ISS advising team, his primary focus is directing the orientation and varied programming aspects of the ISS office.
Prior to coming to KU, Michael was employed at Fort Hays State University in western Kansas, working in a variety of roles in their Student Resident Residential Life department, and also for a while as an Admissions Counselor. In addition, he was a professional photographer with his own photography business for many years.
Having a passion for working with international students, one of the things that Michael most enjoys about his job at ISS is the opportunity to learn something new and different about the world daily as he interacts with individuals from the more than one hundred countries represented in the international community at KU.
Michael spent part of one summer with friends in Taiwan and has traveled briefly to Canada and Mexico. However, his most insightful international experience has been accompanying his wife to her home country of Korea. He, at least in part, attributes his interest in other countries and cultures to an early age when he would listen to radio broadcasts from around the world on his father’s old shortwave radio. He also fondly recalls his intrigue when, as an elementary school student, his parents took him to an international fair sponsored by the international students at a local college in his hometown. Today, he advises the campus International Student Association (ISA) in hosting their own such event each spring.
Michael’s hobbies include collecting antiques and historical paper, woodworking, and going to garage sales with his wife.
Michael Says, "I very badly wanted to learn how to play golf, and I did just that…I learned to play golf VERY BADLY!"
